GOLF COURSES IN SANDESTIN

There are four courses at The Sandestin Resort, about 5-6 miles east of the house. This 2,400-acre resort offers 72 holes of challenging golf in the form of four championship eighteen-hole courses: The Raven Golf Club, Burnt Pine Golf Club, The Links Course and Baytowne Golf Club

The Raven was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. This course meanders through the wetlands of the Sandestin Resort, and is noted for dramatic water features, challenging bunkering and fairways lined with tall pines. The Raven plays from 6,854 to 5,037-yards and offers five sets of tees. The Raven Golf Club can be reached at 850.267.8155.

Burnt Pine Golf Club was designed by architect Rees Jones. This eighteen-hole track's fairways have been described as tumbling, and the course winds through wetlands and marshes. The many water features of this course come into play on 12 holes, and the bunkering is exceptional - making for a most challenging round of golf. Burnt Pine plays from 5,096 to 6,996-yards and offers four sets of tees. Burnt Pine Golf Club can be reached at 850.267.6500.

The Links Course winds alongside the Choctawhatchee Bay. Designed by architect Tom Jackson, this course opened for play in 1976. This track is a shotmaker's course where accuracy and proper club selection are a must in order to outfox the prevailing Gulf Coast winds. The medium sized greens are undulating and moderate in speed. Water hazards come into play on 13 holes. The Links Course plays from 4,969 to 6,710-yards and has four sets of tees. To reach the Links Course call 850.267.8144.

The Baytowne Course is Tom Jackson's second creation at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. The rolling fairways of this course are lined with tall pines and lead to large, undulating greens that are moderate in speed. Water comes into play on twelve holes and the entire course is heavily bunkered. The Baytowne Course plays from 4,862 to 6,890-yards and offers four sets of tees. To contact The Baytowne Course call 850.267.8155.

All courses are open year round, except for one week in October when the courses are closed for aeration.

Greens fees are in the $95-$155 range.

GOLF COURSES IN NICEVILLE – Just north of Destin, across the bay.

Golf courses at Bluewater Bay Resort in Niceville -- http://www.bwbresort.com/golfing.htm
This club has four separate nine-hole courses that are used in a multiple of combinations of eighteen holes. These courses vary in design as their names will indicate. The Lakes Course has many lakes, the Marsh Course runs throughout the marshes, the Bay Course plays alongside a bay and has wetlands throughout, and the Magnolia Course has an abundance of magnolia trees that come into play. All the fairways throughout the four nine hole courses are bordered by thick rough and tree-lines. Each of the courses has many sand bunkers that come into play, and their terrains are reasonably flat. The greens throughout the thirty-six holes are somewhat sloped, but have many subtle breaks that are hard to distinguish. The Bill Skelley School of Golf is located on the premises.

Greens fees in the $32-$75 range.

Eglin Air Force Base Golf Club in Niceville, just north of Destin
This military club has two eighteen hole courses. The Eagle Course has water hazards coming into play on five holes. The Falcon Course has water hazards coming into play on two holes. Both courses are hilly, so you'll never experience a flat lie. There is an "endangered species hazard" that comes into play a few times on the Falcon Course. When this document was originally compiled, guests of the course needed to be sponsored by a Department of Defense member. However when I recently drove by, there was an "Open to the Public" sign. Suggest that you call ahead.

Greens fees in the $20-$40 range.

GOLF COURSES IN FORT WALTON BEACH – West of Destin, 15+/- miles.

Fort Walton Beach Golf Course
1909 Lewis Turner Blvd, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547
This municipal facility has two eighteen-hole courses. The Oaks Course is a shorter, more narrow course with water that comes into play on four holes. There are several dogleg fairways, and the design puts an emphasis on precise placement off the tee. The greens are also very small, and sand bunkers are prevalent in the layout. The back nine was added to the Oaks Course in 1994. The Pines Course is longer with wide-open fairways and large greens. The club personnel consider it to be a great course to improve your confidence.

Greens fees in the $20-$27 range.
